Tim Doner is a polyglot who can speak more than 20 languages. He learning languages as his hobby. He tried many ways to learn languages. The ways interested me.
He said he listened songs in which the other language is written and sped them back up. When I heard this, I feel so sad because I tried the same but couldn't reach his level. However, he stepped further.
He also chat with native speakers. I think this extremely helps us enhance our language which is not the mother tongue.
Moreover, he record himself speaking language into his computer and uploads them on you Tube. Then, native speakers who watched the videos left him advise. As you can see, Tim carried many techniques. I must learn from him.
It is interesting that he also mention to the fact that losing one languages means not only itself but also losing their mythology, history and folklore. Learning the others' language connects learning more than just language.
I totally agree with your last sentence. Lunguage is not for lunguage, for knowing their mythology, history, and folklore in the world!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is! We speak the mother tongue unconsciously, but simultaneously we inherit treasure.
DeleteI also became sad because I did the same way he did. I think a talent of languages is quite necessary to be a polyglot.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! The talent is needed to be a ployglot. However we should try our best to improve our language skill.
DeleteHi, Chiaki, it is indeed cool how learning a language allows one an intimate window on a culture. Certain Japanese words for instance reflect interesting Japanese cultural concepts. An example I can think of is 'wabi sabi.'
ReplyDeleteCheers,
David
I thought I send you a reply but it didn't work.
DeleteThe comment blew this comment is reply, I'm sorry.
Learning language is very deep.
ReplyDeleteYes,Japanese words indicate Japanese culture and attitude.
When I learned that Russian verb are distinguished by whether it is completed or not, I felt that language reflects one of ways of thinking of Russian people.
To be honest, i really don't like recording my voice because while listening again, I feel uncomfortable. I need to overcome myself.
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard that my friend recorded my singing, I feel uncomfortable, too.
DeleteI suppose on the whole most everyone doesn't like very much listening to what they speak or sing.
