Foreign languages in everyday life- Rio Nagasawa

When I was 12 years old, I started studying English for the first time at my junior high school. It was hard for me because I did not know much about English other than alphabets or simple greetings. Especially, pronunciations and memorizing new large numbers of words were difficult. In order to overcome this problem, I practiced in mainly two ways.
The first one is that read the textbook and words book aloud over and over. And the other one is that I tried to find similar or same expressions and words in daily lives. For example, in sightseeing spots in Japan, big stations, lyrics of foreign songs or movies. When I found the words that I have already learned, I was so excited that it motivated me to work harder.
I can say the same thing when I started learning Chinese in my university. When I went to sightseeing spots or airport in south east Asian countries, I could find many Chinese writing and it made me feel like continue to study Chinese.

  1. I have the same opinion, especially with the second way. I learned Thai in my university, and I got excited when I could read the signboard written in Thai. I became motivated to learn Thai more.

  2. I think this way can make me exciting because the wisdom which I got on the desk comes to my real life.
I study Russian in my university, so I'll practice this way when I go to Russia!

    2. I usually get satisfied by inputting, so I greatly agree with you.

  3. I know what you mean. Most of us learn an additional lunguage to make our everyday life interesting. When we find some writings written in that lunguage at any place, it would be motivation as well!

  4. I think your way to learn a new language is great in that you can connect your studying with your daily life, and you can enjoy learning languages. I'll try to find some words or phrase in daily life!!

    1. Connecting our studying with our daily life and enjoying it is very important and what a good point about it is we can do the two at the same time!

  5. As you did I read the texts aloud when I was a junior high school student but now I don't. It is said that reading aloud helps you improve your English so maybe I should even now. I'm wondering why nobody corrects my pronunciation when I'm talking with native speakers.

  6. I agree with you. It is so interesting to encounter the words I learned in classes and be able to understand the meaning. That's why I want to learn languages.
