Diving into a culture - Bia Anchão

Sometimes we got stock in the idea of studying and forgot how important is practicing what we have learnt. Or sometimes, we just are a little bit shy to show people what and why we have been studying so hard. Coming to New Zealand was turning time for me.

Recently I moved from Brazil, to work as a dairy assistant in a farm at Papakaio, a inner country area near Oamaru town. I couldn’t know that diving into a new place should be the best way to trully learn English.

Instead of doing repeatedly listening, writing and reading lessons, I needed to understand what my work mates were asking and telling me. Otherwise, things could go really wrong.
And I am pretty sure that in the beginning all this pressure make you feel afraid, but asking them to repeat or teach you something MUST NOT be a reason to you feel this way.

So, as Mark Spina said today in our class, taking risks is the best way to learn another language!

  1. I agree with your statement. In order to learn and improve one’s English, it is very important to live in English countries and communicate with native speakers because it requires her (or him) using English all day long. In fact, I feel as if my English gets better and better by communicating with native speakers in New Zealand.

  2. I think you can improve your English when it is necessary, so I agree with you and I came here for the same reason. In my home I can’t speak Japanese. I think this environment will help me improve my English. Necessity is the mother of invention, they say.

    1. I'm positive about this! Every time you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, even if not related to English, you automatically feel the necessity to make a decision in order to restore or soften.

  3. I love your opinion. I don't have the courage, but I don't want to be afraid to take risks to improve my English skills.

  4. You are so tough!! I am planning to study in Finland for a year from this summer and I am worried about my language skills. But reading your text, I started to think that I must be positive to dive into a new culture.

  5. "Dive into a new environment" will be my motto.
So important but at the same time so difficult.
I'll keep it in my mind and try to do it.

  6. The title of your essay is good! I am usually afraid of making mistakes and don't have confidence, so I will try to challenge, and take risks to improve my English skills.
